Robert Bateman: Renowned Wildlife Artist and Conservationist

Robert Bateman, born in Toronto, is a celebrated wildlife artist and dedicated conservationist. He earned a degree in geography from the University of Toronto and spent 20 years teaching high school, including a two-year stint in Nigeria. His passion for cultural and natural heritage grew during his world travels in 1957-58. In 1976, Bateman left teaching to pursue painting full-time, journeying to remote natural areas with his artist/conservationist wife, Birgit. In 1985, the family settled on Salt Spring Island.

Bateman's love for art and nature began early. His painting style evolved from representational to impressionism, cubism, and abstract expressionism, before returning to realism in his early thirties. This shift allowed him to better capture the uniqueness of the natural world, establishing him as a leading artist in nature depiction.

In the 1970s and early 1980s, Bateman's work gained critical acclaim and a large following. His pieces are part of many public and private collections and displayed in several art museums, including the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson Hole, WY. Bateman has hosted numerous solo museum shows across North America, including a notable exhibition at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. His retrospective, "The Art of Robert Bateman," toured Canada and the USA for two years and included a solo show in four Russian cities.

Bateman's art mirrors his dedication to ecology and conservation. Since the early 1960s, he has been active in naturalist and conservation organizations globally. He advocates for environmental and preservation issues, using his artwork and limited edition prints to raise millions of dollars for these causes.

Books about Bateman's life and art have sold over 1,000,000 copies. His latest book, "Robert Bateman’s Canada," was released in October 2017. He has also been featured in several films and TV programs. Bateman has received numerous honours, awards, and 14 honorary doctorates, including being named an Officer of the Order of Canada. In recognition of his contributions to art, teaching, and conservation, one public and two secondary schools bear his name.

Many of Bateman's early works are showcased at The Robert Bateman Centre on the Inner Harbour of Victoria, BC, offering insights into his life and philosophies. He is widely recognized for his pro-nature education efforts through his art, writings, and public speaking. A natural and engaging teacher, Bateman's artwork continues to educate and inspire.
