Daphne Odjig (1919–2016) was a groundbreaking Canadian First Nations artist of Odawa-Potawatomi-English descent. A founding member of the Professional Native Indian Artists Association often called the Indian Group of Seven. Odjig played a vital role in bringing Indigenous art into mainstream Canadian art discourse.
Her distinctive style blended Woodlands and pictographic traditions with Cubism and Expressionism, often exploring themes of Indigenous identity, mythology, family, and colonial impact. She received numerous honours, including the Order of Canada, the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts, and induction into the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts.
Odjig’s work is held in major public collections across Canada and internationally. She remains celebrated for her bold lines, vibrant colour palettes, and cultural storytelling that helped shape contemporary Indigenous art in Canada.
