Marcia Harris | The Wait of Light

Loch Gallery Calgary is pleased to present Marcia Harris’s brand-new body of work in her upcoming solo exhibition The Wait of Light. Known for her nostalgic depictions of urban landscapes, Marcia’s paintings reveal familiar Calgary places in a new light.

 

The collection of paintings in The Wait of Light captures the inevitable and ongoing transformation of a city, and indeed, the moments these urban spaces have represented—or will come to represent—in our lives. The blurred edges and interplay of light and shadow in Marcia’s paintings evoke ethereal, dreamlike qualities, with nuanced and fragmented undertones of nostalgia. Deftly balancing elements of realism with beautifully unresolved areas of loosely applied paint, she conveys a weight and a wait—is it regret or a longing for the past?

 

Or perhaps, it is anticipation for the future. Despite the apparent stillness of the quiet streets in her paintings, there is often a sense of expectation—the warm lights within beckoning on a frigid winter evening, or the brief moment of waiting to cross the street. In the blink of an eye, the scene will transform—the light will change, and the city will continue to shift with the constant forward movement of time.
