Ron Bolt is recognized across Canada and abroad as a painter of nature and the sea in a photo-realistic style. He began his career over 50 years ago as an abstractionist and has periodically returned to that idiom in works exploring music and foreign cultures. He does so again in this dynamic series concerning various musical terms and compositions. He explains this recent project in his own words.
“The 12 paintings entitled Night Music originated from the evocative time lapse photographs of the Toronto skyline taken by my partner Lauretta Holbrook. They express the vibrancy and drive of a great city. But, as well, and because of my musical studies that led to an associate diploma from the Royal Conservatory in Toronto, they suggested music. Visual representations of the sounds of the music I studied or that I have enjoyed listening to. In analysis and performance musicians consider such concepts as line, colour, form, dynamics and texture, all concepts that painters deal with. Pure music is recognized as the most abstract of art forms. It’s relation to the creation of visual art has always interested me. I hope you get as much pleasure from exploring these pieces as I did in making them.” - Ron Bolt
