A bronze sculpture by Winnipeg artist Ivan Eyre will be installed at a Vancouver park this month as part of the 2014 Vancouver Biennale, a celebration of art in public spaces.
Bird Wrap, Eyre's 2.4-metre sculpture of a kneeling "mythical bird man," is being transported to Vancouver, where it will take up residence at Thornton Park until July 2016.
The sculpture will be the first major work to be installed in the latest Biennale, according to organizers. Eyre is a painter and sculptor who taught at the University of Manitoba until his retirement in 1993.
He has had numerous solo shows since 1962 and his work is collected throughout Canada. Nine of his works are in a sculpture garden that opened in July 2011 at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinberg, Ont.
"For me, the motivation to sculpt or paint is fundamental in itself in going forward in search of perfection, meaning and uniqueness," Eyre stated in a news release.
Artists from 25 countries and four continents have taken part in the Vancouver Biennale. This year marks its third anniversary.
