The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) Calgary is proud to present Olympian Heights, a unique collection of portraits featuring some of Canada’s iconic Olympic and Paralympic sports legends.
In January of this year, MOCA brought Andy Warhol’s 1977 Athletes series to the city—ten extraordinary portraits of ten iconic athletes.
In the footsteps of the Warhol series, top Canadian athletes were matched with some of Alberta’s most accomplished artists. The athletes—all former Olympic and Paralympic champions—include Alexandre Bilodeau, Catriona LeMay Doan, Rick Hansen, Clara Hughes, Beckie Scott, Kyle Shewfelt, Mark Tewksbury, Hayley Wickenheiser, Simon Whitfield, the Canadian 1996 Olympic 4 x 100 relay race team, and Moe Norman.
The artists include Matthew Mark, Lisa Brawn, Chris Cran, Elena Evanoff, Janine Hall, John Hall, Viviane Mehr, Erik Olson, Carl White, John Will, and Bill McCarroll.
This collection can be viewed daily at MOCA from May 25 to July 1, 2013.
On Friday June 7, MOCA will hold a reception from 7:00 to 11:00pm, with a live auction at 8:00pm to allow people the opportunity to own a piece of this incredible collection, with proceeds supporting the continued fundraising efforts of MOCA Calgary.
The pieces are available for pre-sale at their retail value for those who want to avoid the risk of losing them to somebody else at the auction.
John Hall's still-life portrait of Canadian athlete Hayley Wickenheiser can be viewed here.
