"Sir Winston Churchill High receives bust of school's namesake"

Students at Sir Winston Churchill High School were put under the watchful eye of their namesake Thursday when a bronze bust of the man was unveiled.
The piece, created by sculptor Peter Sawatzky, was commissioned by the Sir Winston Churchill Society of Calgary to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Churchill’s death.
Society president Steven Robertson said the bust will serve as a reminder of the former British prime minister’s influence. It’s to remain at the northwest school on indefinite loan.
“It’s really an excellent piece, both as a piece of art and an enduring reminder of the man himself,” Robertson said.
A donation from the family of Calgary philanthropist Dick Matthews helped finance the project.
The artwork, now displayed in the school foyer, is one of many ways the local Sir Winston Churchill Society chapter connects with students and continues his legacy, including high school debates and programs at Mount Royal University.
Churchill, who guided Britons through the Second World War during his first term as prime minister, died in January 1965.
