The Assiniboine Park Conservancy unveiled a monumental bronze sculpture by Manitoba artist Peter Sawatzky of a polar bear and her cubs at the Assiniboine Park Zoo in Winnipeg on September 24th; the sculpture was commissioned by Bob Williams as a gift to the conservancy. The monumental bronze titled Mother Polar Bear and Cubs, is installed in front of the Zoo’s new entrance off Roblin Blvd.
“This life-size statue welcomes you to the new Assiniboine Park Zoo, but also sends a message about environmental responsibility,” says Williams. “Often a mother bear will stand up to see if there is any danger ahead for her cubs. The real danger is the loss of her habitat; her environment is shrinking. We can help by reducing our impact on the environment.”
“Art in all its forms is an essential part of the Assiniboine Park experience,” said Margaret Redmond, president & CEO, Assiniboine Park Conservancy.
Peter Sawatzky is an award-winning artist, a recipient of the Order of Manitoba. His bronze sculptures are inspired by wildlife and are in collections nationally as well and internationally.
